Here's why Noni loves to Op Shop

Dress $20 from Lifeline, Bag $6 Lifeline

When I go shopping, I look for colour, style and comfort...... preferably everything I buy should be non-iron and/or have at least 3% elastane or some other kind of stretch. I love anything in earthy tones, mauve or lilacs, mushroom pink or brown.

I love fabrics - textures and colours fascinate me.

My very first fashion memory is sewing a pair of yellow linen culottes and a tapestry waistcoat. The tapestry was upholstery fabric. I wore this amazing outfit to my very first school dance and thought I looked wonderful. Since then I have had a passion for fashion and have enjoyed many, many years of fashion experiments some OK, even good and some spectacularly disastrous. I have finally learnt to recognise which colours and style best suit me..... I think!

I always like to go shopping..... but for me, 2012 is going to be a shopping challenge. 2012 is going to be the Year of the Not-for-Profit Op Shop. This means shopping only in op shops for all of 2012. I’ll keep you posted on how this New Year’s resolution holds up. I’m excited about the challenge because I love the element of surprise associated with op-shopping. I never know what wonderful treasures are waiting for me .... and as an bonus, I am doing the planet a favour by recycling and as an added bonus, the money I spend is going to charity. It’s a win, win and win situation.

My favourite Op Shop is the Lifeline store in the Blockside & Ferguson Arcade on Adelaide Street.

My fashion heroine is my Aunty Dorothy, a beautiful woman who has perfected the art of finding treasures amongst trash and who introduced me to the pleasures of op-shopping when she gave me a beautiful piece of John Kaldor watered green silk which she found in a Salvos store. I ’m keeping it for a special occasion .........
